Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley has signed a new law raising the minimum age to drop out of high school in the state from 16 to 17. The law, which Riley signed Monday, requires that a student must attend an exit interview with a school administrator and a parent or guardian before dropping out.
Whenever a student 16 years of age or older withdraws from school, the attendance officer or chief attendance administrator shall notify the Department of Public Safety of the withdrawal. Withdrawal shall be defined as more than 10 consecutive or 15 days total unexcused absences during a single semester.
